The Truth About Being Vegan – Is It Healthy?

Go Vegan

There are a lot of people out there that want to give up animal products. Some people have ethical concerns, while others are worried about the toll that farming is taking on the environment.

If you’re considering a vegan diet, there are a number of things you will have to think about. Giving up all animal products isn’t going to be easy. You’re going to have to kiss some of your favorite foods goodbye.

One of the main concerns that people have is the impact that a vegan diet will have on their overall health. Can eating a vegan diet harm you?

Being vegan can be healthy, but that doesn’t mean that a vegan diet is always going to be healthy. Here are a few of the things that you should know before you start your diet.

Protein Shouldn’t Be A Concern

One of the biggest concerns that a lot of people have about a vegan diet is protein. A lot of people are convinced that they won’t be able to get all of the protein that they need.

However, protein isn’t something that you will have to worry too much about. There are lots of vegan protein sources, from beans to quinoa.

In addition, many people consume far more protein than they need to. Reducing the amount of protein that you eat will make you more healthy, not less healthy.

You’ll Want To Make Sure Your Diet Is Balanced

A vegan diet can be challenging to follow. Because of this, a lot of the people that adopt this sort of diet wind up sticking to certain staple meals.

It’s good to have a few meals that you can fall back on. You can eat these meals if you don’t have any other options. However, you need to make sure that your diet is balanced.

You should be eating a variety of foods, and you should be taking in a number of nutrients. When you’re first starting out, you may want to spend some time planning out your diet. This will make it easier for you to eat the way you want to.

You May Need To Take Supplements

You should be able to get most of the vitamins and nutrients you need while avoiding animal products entirely. With that said, taking a supplement could be a smart idea.

If you are going to take a supplement, your best bet would be Vitamin B12. This doesn’t occur naturally in any plants, so a vitamin may be the only way that you can get it. With that said, there are also fortified vegan foods that contain B12.

  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • dash cayenne pepper
  • dash tabasco sauce (optional)

Taste, and adjust seasonings to taste. You may want to add a bit of salt, even though the recipe doesn’t call for it, depending on your personal preference and taste buds.

Makes about 5-6 servings as a main dish.

Avoid Foods High in Sodium

Pre-packaged foods tend to be high in sodium, which is means that they should be eaten in moderation. If you are going to be buying vegan frozen foods, look for ones that contain a lot of natural ingredients. The more pronounceable ingredients on the label, the better.

Being vegan isn’t always going to be healthy. If you eat nothing but vegan mac and cheese, you are definitely going to run into some problems.

With that said, being vegan certainly can be healthy. If you are willing to put in the extra effort, you should be able to change your diet while keeping your body very healthy.
